September General Meeting and Guest Artist Workshop with Jonas Dupuich

Bring a Tree Constructive Critique with Guest Artist Jonas Dupuich

Our September 25th general meeting will be an interactive critique where members have an opportunity to bring in trees for suggestions and constructive criticism by bonsai professional Jonas Dupuich. Please see the post below for Jonas's bio if you haven't already. Our guest artist will provide suggestions on improving the health of your tree, applying an initial design, reworking established bonsai, refining for show, etc. Those who wish may even bring tools and wire if they care to make some of the suggested changes on the spot. The better the material, the more Jonas will have to discuss but we welcome pre-bonsai, raw material, and yamadori as well. This is a great opportunity to receive advice and insight on any tree(s) you've struggled with or aren't sure how to take to the next level. It's also an important time of year to be thinking about work on pines, so those with any questions on pine care or maintenance are welcome to bring them. The meeting will take place from 7:00pm to approximately 9:30pm at the UW Center for Urban Horticulture. We look forward to seeing you there!

Jonas Dupuich is a Northern California bonsai professional who began his bonsai journey over twenty years ago when he befriended Boon Manakitivipart. Jonas is the owner of Bonsai Tonight and the author of a blog by the same name. His blog has become the most successful English-language bonsai blog in the world. Created in 2009, it features well over 700 free articles on a wide range of topics with new posts published every Tuesday and Friday.
Jonas is a founding member of Bay Island Bonsai and has studied with Boon for many decades. He has also worked with award-winning Japanese professionals Akio Kondo and Daisaku Nomoto.
In 2011, Jonas spent two months immersed in the world of Japanese bonsai studying with fourth-generation bonsai grower and artist Junichiro Tanaka of Aichi-en nursery. During that time, he worked on trees in Tanaka's collection and participated in various high-level exhibitions including Gomangoku, Meifu-ten, Taikan-ten and Sakufu-ten.
Jonas now travels across the country doing demos and workshops and is widely respected as an excellent teacher.

Jonas will be holding a workshop on Sunday (currently full except for observers), September 24th from 1-4pm at Bonsai Northwest in Tukwila. The workshop is limited to eight PSBA members at a cost of $55.00 each. Participants are expected to bring a mature tree with good potential, their own tools and wire. If you wish to purchase one for the workshop, Bonsai NW has a wide selection of trees available. Silent observers are welcome at a cost of $10.00. This is a great opportunity for those new (or not so new) to bonsai to pay a small price to learn by observing.
